Railroad Signal Relays
Back
Railroad signal relays play a crucial role in both
the past and present of railroad signaling. In previous years,
railroads wired signals
with entirely relay-based systems. These systems were very robust,
and can often be found still in operation. However a price must
be payed, the relay bungalows and relay rooms in interlocking
towers had to be massive to fit all the equipment inside. This
made
them a prime target for much smaller and far more powerful microprocessor
based technoligies, which have began to take
over the job of the relay.
